Lesson Title: Workplace Readiness: Essential Employability Skills in Action
Grade Level: 9–12 (Adaptable for all CTE pathways)
Time Required: Two 45–60 minute class periods (or one 90-minute block)

Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify and define 8–10 Essential Employability Skills.
- Demonstrate professional communication in a simulated workplace scenario.
- Apply problem-solving and teamwork skills to a real-world case study
Activity 1: Workplace Reality Check (Icebreaker – 15 minutes)
Prompt:
“What makes someone valuable at work besides technical skills?”
Students brainstorm in small groups.
Class discussion connects responses to official WBL expectations.
Teacher introduces Essential Employability Skills framework.
Activity 2: Case Study Simulation (30–40 minutes)
Scenario:
Students are placed in teams. Each team receives a workplace scenario:
Examples:
- A team member is consistently late on a project.
- A customer complains publicly on social media.
- A supervisor gives unclear instructions.
- A conflict arises between coworkers.
Teams must:
- Identify which employability skills are involved.
- Develop a professional response.
- Role-play the situation.
Assessment Focus:

- Team collaboration
Activity 3: Workplace Readiness Self-Assessment (20 minutes)
Students complete a rubric modeled after Workplace Readiness Skills Assessment:
Rating scale (1–4):
- 1 = Beginning
- 2 = Developing
- 3 = Proficient
- 4 = Career Ready
Reflection Questions:
- What are your strongest workplace skills?
- What skill needs development?
- What specific action will you take in the next 30 days?
